President Pelosi? [Jun. 10th, 2007|08:22 am]
America the Insane, from the local to the global . . .

America the Insane, part 1 -- a couple just started a two year prison sentence for providing alchohol for their son's high school party. This was quite responsible of them, actually, as they agreed to do so on the condition that the teens spend the night and not drive anywhere. No one was hurt, injured, assaulted, or otherwise damaged. Their appeals all ran out, and all they managed to do was get the original EIGHT YEAR sentence reduced to two.

America the Insane, part 2 -- via mediagirl.org, I found this link: http://www.talk2action.org/story/2007/6/8/114236/1096

Media Girl quoted the essential part of the news:

Today, the House Democrats will waltz into the mark-up of the Labor HHS Subcommittee and proudly present a bill that puts their stamp of approval on domestic abstinence-only-until-marriage programs--an ideological boondoggle that threatens the health and well-being of America's youth.

The most appalling aspect of this sell-out is that that the Democrats will not only fully fund the worst of the failed abstinence-only-until-marriage programs--they'll give them a $27 million increase--the first in three years!....

This is why I loathe/hate all the wackjobs that the DNC types helped get elected, and why I view them as Republicans, regardless of official party affiliation.

Zero chance in hell I will vote for ANY dem who supports this shit, which hopefully will not go thru. If you're in the US, fax/e-mail/call your congressperson.

America the Insane, part 3 -- Woo hoo! Our happy little fascist regime not only re-did Vietnam except w/worse potential long-term consequences, they've now gone a long way towards re-starting the Cold War!!! Y'all have managed to follow this little story, hidden behind the Paris Goes to Jail / In and Out and In Again! coverage? In case anyone missed it, someone told the Idiot-Dupe-In-Chief to set up one of our totally useless, proven not to work reliably missile defense systems in Europe, ostensibly to keep Iran from throwing missiles at various European locales which aren't particularly worried about Iran and shockingly enough don't actually want a non-working missile defense system. Apparently, the silly ingrates don't realize that they still owe us for WWII, and are morally obligated to enrich Cheney's buddies in the defense contractor system. Anyhow, Putin (that dude running Russia, for anyone stumbling across this who went to the George W Bush School of International Relations) has his own police-state-in-progress, and he's using this as an excuse to restart the Cold War saber rattling, most likely so that he can further entrench his own fascist regime (and possibly so that he can further enrich himself and his buddies in the process--cause, like, democracy may have failed over there but we successfully exported some of the glories of capitalism and all).

Put this together w/9/ll (whether from frightening incompetence, deliberately letting it happen--that's my take --or actively making sure it happened, the neocons get credit for this one way or another), taking us a long way down the road toward being a police state, bankrupting the country, overseeing the drowning of an entire city, and doing their very best to help destroy the planetary ecosystem, and I'm inclined to agree w/the guy who suggested last night that Bush and Cheney need to be impeached NOW, before they can do any more damage, whether restarting that whole burning river thing from the 60's, activating those emergency powers they granted themselves back in May, or leading us straight into a third World War.

I agree. They keep fucking up something new and worse every week. Time for President Pelosi.

Which ties in nicely to a book review of Jo Walton's Farthing.

This witty, scary little gem breezily details the world of the Farthing Set, a bunch of upper-crust Brits who successfully negotiated a peace treaty with Hitler, where "Nine years had been enough to test the terms of the Farthing Peace and show that England and the Reich could be good friends."

Some great quotes and no spoilers for anything beyond the first chapter except in the vaguest sense if you Read more... )
