"It's so hard, living in the devil's playground . . ." [Nov. 1st, 2009|06:58 am]

[music |Kundalini, Eva Starsinger]

(I started writing this last night; then got distracted partway through; hope everyone had a Happy Halloween or a sensational Samhain, as the case may be, and yay for a full moon on this particular holiday!)

They’re playing only Halloween appropriate music on the local music show tonight, which says something about the depth of musical talent in such a small area and the inclinations of the local artists, that a few dozen bands can easily fill two hours of music w/one song each given such a theme. And then there’s Gram Rabbit, & to a lesser extent Shawn Mafia, a majority of whose songs would probably be appropriate, and lol, a Shawn Mafia song just came on, The Devil Song, “What you gonna do, whatcha gonna do, sweet darling, when the devil comes looking for you?”; and heh, now a second one, “Death in D Major”)(and lol again, then there was news, and we had a visit from Nipty and Nipster {our names for them, I dunno their real names, but they like to nip, therefore their names}, Patches' two puppies next door [we don't know what happened to Patches; she disappeared in late Spring] who are less than a year old but already as big as Marley, and I had to take them back and put them in their yard, and when I get back, Gram Rabbit, "The Devil's Playground").

Finished reading “The Red Tree” this afternoon, then took a nap for a little over an hour that seemed like several, and woke to the canines barking at something outside and Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” on the radio, which seemed quite appropriate for what I had been reading. I think I had been dreaming about writing an extended review of the book, and then lay back down and proceeded to keep writing the review in my head once I established there was nothing serious going on w/the dogs, and somehow finished it before the song was over. It’s not a very long song, so I must’ve been really nearly done in my dream, and still half dreaming when I first woke up. This was followed by the song (guessing at the title) “You’re Never There”, which is absurdly appropriate, and two more pre-local music songs (especially apt, ?"All Good Things Come to an End"?, which had me convinced that my state of mind was interpreting everything to be relevant to the book. which is sort of what you might get if you placed a bitingly angry, deeply grieving and deeply depressed lesbian narrator into an updated combination of Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows" and one of Lovecraft's New England stories (gender and orientation noted only due to the male-centricness of those stories--downright sexism in Lovecraft). It's also a ghost story, thought there may or may not be any "real" ghosts in it. Anyway, after my last entry, I figure I owe y'all a cut, plus, I can't really discuss this as I'd like to w/out spoilers. So, be warned, many spoilers ahead. And I no longer remember my dream review, so you'll get something lesser.

If I could only shed this skin, I might be much more real )

Squee! Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde lives near me!!! [Mar. 20th, 2008|10:31 am]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , , , , ]

I completely forget this the last couple of times I was online, but Monday night I was talking to this guy who has lived up here for 13 years and he said Johnette Napolitano lived in a one bedroom cabin less than a mile from my house! I knew she lived in the Hi Desert when we first moved up here and that one of the local coffee houses stocked Concrete Blonde CD's, but I had no idea if she was still here or exactly how close or far she might be. And he might be a few years out of date, but I just googled her and she apparently is still in Joshua Tree. If she is on the mesa really near us, that would be so cool.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things, or even most vaguely rational schemes of things, that one happens to live near a great artist that one is a fan of is, well, essentially meaningless. And getting excited about it could be compared to getting excited that you ran into Slash at Hamburger Hamlet because you were both picking up take out at the same time, but still . . .

That made me happy.

For those who don't know who she is, lead singer/songwriter for Concrete Blonde!!!!!! One of my favorite bands ever!!! (on the off chance she is one of those artists who get Google alerts when her name comes up, I swear I'm not usually this much of an idiot, and also you may have picked me up when hitchhiking, two women around my age w/lots of tats in a jeep, one of those times being when I was between jobs and really down so thanks!)

If you don't know who Concrete Blonde is, you may have heard them w/out realizing through their cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" on the "Pump Up the Volume" soundtrack, or their one mainstream hit back in the 90's, "Joey" (which despite being a mainstream hit that was used as background in a 90210 episode--which featured Hillary Swank before she was famous -- was a truly awesome and gut-wrenching song), and "I Want You", this really smoothly relaxing sexually cool song that Lori Petty changed clothes to in Point Break. If you haven't, or you heard and liked those, go buy/download(tho if you like it buy it after) or something their Bloodletting CD, at the very least, because just . . . wow. Especially "The Sky is a Poisonous Garden", tho the title song is great and so is "Joey" and "The Beast" and the cover of "Tomorrow Wendy".

Err, also, since I always plug Gram Rabbit when talking about local music, let me say that this quite possibly the best band you've never heard or heard of (except from me).

Their CD's:

* Music to Start a Cult To, 2004 (the year we moved up here, and my favorite by them)
* Cultivation, 2006
* RadioAngel and the RobotBeat, 2007 (if you the phrase "sensual sometimes melodic techno weirdness with vibrant imagery and some meaning beyond the music", this may be for you; which doesn't mean the first two are at all techno; they're more haunting and mocking and melodic).

I just googled them to see if I could find an LA Times interview of their new year's show that I remember thinking described them really well, but I can't find it. I did find their myspace page,
http://www.myspace.com/gramrabbit
& offical website http://www.gramrabbit.com

I should start posting local music things regularly. This will probably go the way of most previous "I think I shall start . . ." things . . . But this area has a knack for attracting artists & outlaws of all stripes, and a lot of the artists don't get enough attention.
